every body is better with Bowen
The Bowen Technique
The Bowen Technique is a gentle and non-invasive form of body work that is capable of healing the entire body at all levels. Developed by the Late Tom Bowen of Geelong, Australia, this most amazing therapy is for all, new born to old and fragile.
It works on multiple levels within our body i.e. the physical, the emotional, the chemical and the spiritual level. Bowen Therapy rehydrates and rebalances all aspects of the physical body.
Age is no limitation for receiving Bowen Therapy. This therapy can be performed on neonates and seniors alike.
Apart from chronic illnesses, Bowen Therapy can also assist in recovery from traumatic and emotional injuries. However, the healing depends upon willingness for each individual’s body to heal itself.
The very subtle moves of Bowen Therapy facilitate the body’s own innate healing capabilities by shifting the body’s focus from “fight, flight and freeze” mode to “rest, relax and repair” mode. The level of touch in Bowen Therapy is very gentle and will vary according to the sensitivity of each client. However, this subtle touch is very effective and it is often noticed that the gentler the touch, the more profound the effect.
Often clients report an instantaneous relief from the symptoms. However, some clients may require a couple of sessions before their minds may register a change.

The Treatment
A Bowen session consists of gentle moves at specific locations on the body with varying pressure and depth. A minimum of 2-minute pause is given between a series of moves to allow the body to integrate the message given via the fascia to the central nervous system. The treatment continues in a similar manner until the required procedures are performed on the body. This can take from 15 minutes to an hour depending upon the client needs and reactions.
What to expect after a session?
The Bowen session stimulates your body to “switch on” its innate healing and balancing mechanisms. The healing process can continue for up to a week after the treatment while your body progressively resets itself back to its blueprint. In most cases, you can expect substantial relief at the end of the first session, or it may take several days before this occurs. About 80% of cases are completely resolved within one to four sessions. However, with chronic conditions, or where repeated injury, emotional trauma, or cell memory issues are involved, a longer series of sessions may be necessary.
Special advice after a treatment
To ensure maximum benefit from your Bowen treatment, it is essential that you should:
- Avoid any other physical therapy, physical activity or other forms of manipulation.
- Avoid sitting for longer than 30 minutes at a time for the rest of the day after your treatment.
- Avoid hot or cold packs as this shall interfere with Bowen work.
- Drink up to two litres of water to enhance detoxification and hydration.
In the case of strong reactions contact the clinic for advice and if symptoms persist seek medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bowen Therapy similar to massage, chiropractor or acupressure?
No, Bowen Therapy is unique. The technique is a total holistic approach where the body heals itself and a therapist is only a facilitator. Unlike any other therapies during this technique there are approximately 2 minute pauses during the session allowing the body to process the impulses that is created by the gentle rolling of the fingers by the therapist.
Why should I refrain from any other body work while having Bowen sessions?
Bowen sessions can be compared to throwing a pebble in a still pond. The pebble creates ripples which need not be disturbed. By throwing another pebble would distort the original pattern of the ripple. Bowen Therapy creates healing ripples in the body that may continue to up to 10 days. Other body work will disturb this healing effect, which means the client has just wasted their money to the Bowen therapist.
Are there any side effects of Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy has no side effects. It is a gentle and non-invasive technique.
How many sessions would I need?
Everybody is unique. Each one responds differently. Number of sessions depends upon the willingness of the client’s body to respond to the therapy. The client would be the best person to know when the healing is complete.
What is a healing crisis?
Healing crisis is when the body responds to the therapy by magnifying the symptoms. This is a good indication but it is recommended to increase the water intake to flush out any toxins that may be released during healing, go for small walks. If the symptoms are unbearable one must ring their therapist or see a doctor.
Does everyone go through a healing crisis?
In my experience one out of 10 clients’ may. But everyone needs to be aware of the healing crisis.
